- Pencil, paper, measuring tape, and right-angled ruler to do all the measurements of your generator.
- MDF or Medium Density Fiberboards to make the box in question.
- Mass Loaded Vinyl or MLV as the first layer of the box.
- Acoustic foam mats as the second layer of your box.
- Another soundproofing compound in the form of green glue will also help to glue the edges down.
- Ventilation ducts, to let your generator box and the generator itself “breathe.”
- Table saw, drill and leveler.
How To Build a Soundproof Generator Box – Generator Quiet Box!

To have an idea of what size box you need to build, you will need to measure the generator, as we said. Once you are done with the length, width, and height of the generator, you will need to add a couple more inches to your measures to leave spacing for additional soundproofing materials. Take the measurements more than once and write down your results in a sheet of paper lest you forget.
Take the circular saw or table saw that you have in your tools shed. Wear protective gear and goggles as you operate this to cut the MDF board. With a pencil or a marker, make points or notes on the boards to which one will sit where in the box. Mark the boards for base, sides, and roof. This will make things easier when you are assembling the entire thing.
Now, you’ll need to cut ventilation ducts. This will help to let the exhaust fumes out along with the heat. You will need to measure the ducts and then cut holes in the MDF of the same size as the ducts. This hole should be positioned on the roof to the side/edge of the MDF. Another hole should be on a side-MDF.
After that, cut the MLVs and foam mats according to the size of the MDFs.
Install the mass loaded vinyl (MLV)
Next, you will add layers to soundproof further your box, MLV acting as your first. Install each layer of MLV to its corresponding MDF board using green glue. Apply more glue to the edges as you secure, to make sure they are correctly sticking to one another. Once you’re done with this, install the acoustic foams on top of the MLVs and keep using green glue to secure these.
Once the glue is well-dried, it is time to assemble. Position the walls of MDF first and screw them rightly into position. Add hinges where you need it. If you see gaps before screwing them into place, use green glue or foam spray to seal the gaps. This will improve the chances of soundproofing the box.
This is the last step you’ll need to do to ensure that there are no chances of accidents. You will need to allow airflow. For this, install the vent ducts into the holes you made previously on the MDFs. Ensure that they are properly placed and not wobbly. Also, keep twists and bends in the ducts because the more barriers you give to sound, the lesser distance it will travel, reducing the noise outside.

These boxes are made for generators that will support your freezer, ACs, or other large appliances when the power goes out. To ensure that it is permanently secure in its position and safe from theft, bad weather, and accidents, you can build it on a concrete pad surrounded by concrete walls.
In order to muffle the sound better, you can increase the density at the core by filling it. The core can play the role of the vents. On top of the box, you can install one or two fans to let the heat5 and exhaust out. You can also cover the fans to avoid accidents.
This is like making a shed for the generator that looks very similar to double-door refrigerators. It has walls on all sides, but only the one to the front is mid-sectioned and opens outwards. So opening it, you see the generator sitting inside.

The shed is without vents and insulation to minimize the sound at its best. However, you can add vents with twisted pipes to it. That will make the ventilation easier. Also, adding insulation and MLV or MDF would make things much better.
This is a box that sits on top of the generator. So you can raise and put it on top and remove it, to see the difference in the sound that you hear with this on the generator and off of it. The frame is made with plywood and a quiet board. To seal the seams, spray foam is used. L-brackets work on the joint, and the end result is a box that you place on top of your generator once you turn it on. And there you go, reduced noise!
